A Promising Material
The International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 (the Beijing Expo) opened on April 29 in Beijing, China. By the invitation of the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR), Jeff Shi—founder of the Dragonfly Design Center—will showcase his latest design work at the Beijing Expo’s INBAR Garden.
The exhibition includes over 30 pieces of bamboo furniture by Shi, most of which are international design award winners. Known for his original designs that boast a unique blend of traditional Chinese cultural DNA and modern aesthetics, and his tireless pursuit of craftsmanship and technical perfection, Shi is an exemplary figure in contemporary design. Named an “Outstanding Design Talent of 2018” by the Capital Design Improvement Initiative, he is thrilled to be given the opportunity to exhibit his work at the Chinese capital and the host city of the 2019 Expo.
In Chinese, the phrase “a promising material” often refers to a person of talent and potential that can achieve greatness with good guidance and cultivation. Under this concept, the upcoming exhibition is an exploration into the untapped potential and value of bamboo as a design material. With remarkable flexural strength and an elegant appearance, bamboo holds special place in Shi’s heart. Through his thoughtfully and ingeniously designed furniture, he hopes to give bamboo the relevance and recognition that it deserves in the modern age and celebrate its timeless charm. By creating furniture, Shi is creating a spiritual connection to Chinese cultural traditions and a lifestyle that reflects it.
Bamboo is one of the first production materials used by mankind. Apart from its ideal qualities and aesthetic appeal, bamboo’s importance for the sustainable future also lies in its role as an environmentally friendly material. By transforming Chinese cultural traditions and craftsmanship into design works that invoke contemporary design sensibilities, Shi has elevated bamboo from a natural material to a high-end product, pushing China further into the globe design center stage while garnering international acclaim along the way.
《The Screen Chair》
The Screen Chair designed by Jeff Dayu Shi is a combination of a screen and a couch. The simple and concise grids show the coexistence of “concealment” and“exposure”.
The Clothing Rack Cart is produced in accordance with the pliable nature of bamboo fibers – overlapping bamboo slats are formed by heat bending and assembled to form the shape of a dragon’s head. Combined with the concept of the traditional farming wheelbarrow, the clothing rack can be easily pushed and pulled by its handle. Traditional mortise-tenon joints techniques was applied to all structures.
Ping Cha folding screen incorporates seven of these ancient weaving technique, as well as a completely new technique Shi has developed himself, which involves stretching woven bamboo panels on to a frame instead of fixing them with glue. Among them are the Mountain Trail, the Multilayer Diagonal Weave, the Pine Leave, the Wuyi Oolong, the Free Style, the Wave and the Windmill, which are all commonly seen in the traditional daily objects in China.
《Chair Bashi》
Chair Bashi is a contemporary Chinese chaise lounge chair by taking advantage of bamboo slats’ toughness, flexibility and plasticity and using Shi’s bamboo furniture-making techniques, and to explore the infinite possibilities of bamboo materials through this project. The whole chair is designed with a bamboo cushion spring mechanism, featuring a structure inspired by the curved steel plate that can be found in a typical vehicle shock absorber. Thanks to the flexibility and plasticity of bamboo, the softness of different sections of the seat can be adjusted using this mechanism. This, and the spaces between the slats that enable breathability, drastically enhance the comfortability of the chair, achieving similar effects of a soft cushion with hard materials. This Chinese chaise lounge chair also incorporates the“weight brake mechanism,” an apparatus that we developed independently by drawing inspirations from gravity and the disc brake in motor vehicles. When a person is lying down on the chair, the “weight brake mechanism” is completely clamped by the forces of gravity and friction, the same way the brake pads in a disc brake are squeezed by the caliper. In this way, the seat recline angle is held stationary and will not move with a person on the chair. On the other hand, when there is no weight on the chair, the user can adjust its recline angle with ease. With a relatively low-technology mechanism, we accomplished a good design that is highly functional, durable and comfortable to use.
Throughout his decades-long career, Shi has switched paths a number of time, working first as a jewelry designer, then design products buyer and product designer. But it was his passion for bamboo and design ingenuity that has earned him countless awards and accolades both domestically and overseas. As an acknowledgment of his contribution to bamboo design, INBAR included Shi in its 2017 publication, 100 Heroes of China's Bamboo Industry, and invited him to present a keynote speech at the inaugural edition of the Global Bamboo And Rattan Congress ( June 25-27, 2018, Beijing) . He was amongst Forbes China’s “Top 30 Most Influential Chinese Designers 2015” and New Weekly’s “2014 New & Sharp Top List,Most Market Appealing Designer”. China National Interior Decoration Association named him one of the “China Interior Design People of the Year” in 2013, while Interior Design magazine inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2010. In addition, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Fashion Personage Award in 2019 by the China National Garment Association, and was named one of the “2014 Chinese Cultural Figures” by the Chinese Culture Promotion Society.

A promising material, by definition, is packed with future possibilities. The applause and acclamation have not— and will not— stop Shi from continuing to discover and unleash the potential and value of bamboo, and we can expect from him more original designs that lovingly carry the emblems of traditional Chinese culture.
Designis a wonderful tool that helps us solve the challenges of today and tomorrow.Through his work, Shi hopes to share with the world the allure and excellence of original Chinese design and be a part of bamboo’s rise as “a promising material” for the future.
