Art Central, presented with Lead Partner UOB, is pleased to announce world-class artistic projects and meaningful educational experiences with funding from the Pilot Programme for the Mega Arts and Cultural Events Fund (Mega ACE Fund). The grant enables the eighth edition of the Fair to enrich its renowned programme and reach wider audiences. Art Central will take place at the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre from Wednesday, 22 March to Saturday, 25 March 2023 with a Preview on Tuesday, 21 March.

Art Central 2023”

Art Central 2023 presents 72 galleries representing the next generation of contemporary art from Asia’s most ambitious galleries alongside established galleries from across the globe.

Art Central 2023 will prominently feature internationally-acclaimed Chinese artist Yang Yongliang’s Glows in the Night, a video artwork to be presented on an impressively-scaled LED installation of 18 metres, the largest-ever presentation of the artwork and largest presentation by the artist in Hong Kong.

With a background in Chinese painting, Yang applies his training to the reconstruction and recomposition of urban images in the style of traditional landscape paintings that reveal deeper tales of modern civilisation. Glows in the Night is a digital landscape featuring alarming fireworks and skyglow in the splendour of the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau. Contemplating ecological concerns caused by urbanisation, commercialisation and consumerism, the work depicts the auspicious delusion light pollution creates as cities celebrate their modern achievements, prompting the audience to rethink the past before moving into the future.

PERFORMANCE ART

Over the five-day run of the Fair, three performance artists will deliver a series of intimate displays of movement thematically centred on displacement, personal discovery, and survival. Working in concert, Kensa Hung and Kiwi Chan will move through scenes portraying keywords surrounding the experience of homelessness. In their work titled Pack / Unpack, the artists will enact a conflicting performance of opposing actions in an exploration of what it means to pack and unpack. In 54 of 206, Stephanie Keung examines the human body through the articulation of hands and wrists. The work’s title refers to the number of hand and wrist bones compared to total bones in the average human skeleton. Through her art, Keung aims to bring attention to the world and the people around us. Natasha Cheung draws on her international background living as part of the Chinese diaspora in She Taut, through which she communicates key elements of her personal identity that have been constructed in her survival as a queer, Chinese woman. Cheung brings these elements to the foreground in her performance of the paradox – that is, living as a woman in a diasporic community.
