There are numerous important global trends that are currently influencing how we design the built environment. Climate change and the health of the planet is currently the most pressing of these, but at the same time there is a large focus on human health and how buildings and cities can best be designed to promote this. These include community-building to mitigate isolation and loneliness, inclusion, diversity and equality. Flexible and adaptable design solutions are also much sought after, as these can ensure the financial resilience and longevity of building stock, while technology is playing an ever-increasing role in how our buildings operate, be maintained, and have their performance measured. On an urban level, mixed-use developments are becoming increasingly popular to activate neighbourhoods and ensure resilience, while nature-inclusive design is understood to benefit not only natural ecosystems, but also human health and well-being. Regeneration and transformation projects where we can retain existing buildings is also an important development in the context of climate change and reducing carbon emissions, in addition to a broader understanding of the importance of the circular economy. But there are also very interesting things happening in the world of workplace design and hospitality, both of which are recognising the need to put health, wellness and sustainability at the top of their agendas.

Take residential architecture as a spot, what are your thoughts on the future of architecture and living space? Please illustrate it with ongoing projects.

Densification and increasing populations are key challenges that we are all facing, with housing shortages being reported all over the world. In terms of solutions, we need to find ways for our cities to grow while infringing as little as possible on nature - and to make them as nature-inclusive as possible. I do believe growth in this sector will inevitably be vertical, but we have to ensure that the environments we design and build are healthy for all people and will benefit, or improve, their host cities as a whole. An integral approach, I believe, is an essential solution for this. We have put these ideas into the design of the STH BNK by Beulah development in Melbourne. It’s a mixed-use project that is extremely green, incorporates a fantastic mix of culture and commerce, while also truly activating the public realm, the neigbourhood and even the skyline.

The feasibility and effectiveness of this solution is also demonstrated by the integration of various programs through the establishment of a waterfront community in our KWah G72 mixed-use development in Nanjing, which will create a green living and working environment for the residents as well as the neighbouring communities.

Sharing amenities in residential properties is also a solution in many cases, and we have designed a number of projects where this has been a feature. But perhaps our just completed residential building ‘Van B’, in Munich is the most appropriate to mention here. There, we didn’t only include shared spaces, we designed a highly flexible partition and furniture ‘plugin-based’ system, which allows homeowners to use the space in a 40m2 apartment as if it were 60m2. The system allows residents to easily change the use of the same floor space in a matter of seconds. Simply by sliding the hanging plugins, they can transform a room from an office space into a living room or a bedroom. There are nine different elements in the system and each one is devised on a grid. This means that no matter which elements the homeowner chooses, and no matter how they arrange them, the modules will work together. Space and property prices are also a factor in Munich, so finding a workable solution for prospective homeowners was essential here and the plugin system is something we are now developing further for other cities that are facing similar space-shortage problems.

Knowledge Matters and sustainability are two key words that you have repeatedly mentioned recently. In your opinion, what role does architecture play as a communication medium?

For me, architecture is fundamentally about creating truly meaningful experiences for people, on multiple levels, and not principally about its visual aspects or effects. I would say it is fundamentally about creating positive impact, through many and varied integrated constructs - one of which is communication. Throughout history buildings have often been a means to convey power and authority, or to inspire awe in a spiritual or religious sense. These days they are more often a representation of a brand or a lifestyle. This is interesting because architecture now must convey more varied values, and this is where I believe it’s true communicative power lies: it can be a powerful symbol of a city or nation’s cultural values that are representative of shared and important ideals. In the future, I believe that to some extent ‘influence’ will be determined by buildings that truly achieve these aims: that what we consider to be ‘spectacular’ will no longer be determined by the image of the building alone, but by the kind of cultural values and knowledge its design and construction represent, exemplify and promote.

With the focus on sustainable development and urban renewal, what practices has UNSTUDIO done in material studies and use of materials? Please describe it in detail with ongoing projects.

Alongside the kind of material research we do within our projects, over the years we have done a great deal of applied research into all kinds of different materials. This kind of research and development is typically done in collaborations with experts from other fields and with universities and, in our case, usually involves improving the performance of materials for sustainable purposes. For example we have designed, developed and brought to market esthetic solar panels (‘Solar Visuals’) that can have bespoke patters printed onto their surface and be used as facade cladding. We also worked very closely with Monopol Colors in Switzerland to develop a new, highly reflective paint (‘The Coolest White’) that can be used on all surfaces to mitigate the urban heat island effect. We are also part of the Osirys project that is researching a holistic solution for facades and interior partitions composed of biocomposites. The goal of the project is to design biocomposites based materials that lead to three products: an interior partition system, a multi-layered facade system and a curtain wall facade system. Alongside this kind of applied research, we also engage in material research when designing products and just launched our most sustainably materialised and circular product to date.
