There’s nothing conventional about Ottawa and Gatineau’s Zibi House, the symbolic heart and gathering place of one of the world’s most progressive new communities. But that’s to be expected, given that the structure was designed to serve as a physical representation of a revolutionary concept: the development of a 34-acre waterfront city poised to become Canada’s most progressive urban locale.

Zibi House provides the world’s first look at what’s in store when the city is completed, and Spring 2020 will bring a series of food and cultural events to the House, to fully utilize it as a community hub.

For its design, Dream and Theia Partners enlisted renowned multidisciplinary firm Studio Paolo Ferrari, giving the Toronto-based team carte blanche to create a space that’s equal parts cultural hub, event space, and community landmark. “We wanted to introduce this project to the public in a tactile and visceral way,” Ferrari says.

Ferrari applied his signature holistic approach to the undertaking, designing a structure encompassing a series of light-filled rooms that feel warm, inviting, and unexpectedly refined.

Each room underscores a unique element of the site, pairing distinct architectural detailing with an experience meant to stimulate one of the five senses: A richly colored Sound Room features a ceiling-mounted indigo cone that plays music by indigenous songwriters. A wood-paneled Scent Room houses a variety of native plants, while local flavors are highlighted in the sleek, bright Taste Room.

We did not want this project to feel at all like a sales gallery and we were much more interested in creating a place that celebrated the ambitions of the development in a visceral way. The arrival is gracious and inspired in part by the classic courtyard house, while the experience rooms are more expressive in both their architecture and tonality.

Altogether, Zibi House is a destination that Ferrari hopes will incite both dialogue and delight. “Simply put,” the designer says, “our intent is to inspire, and our hope is that guests leave with a sense of joy.”
