Originally built in 1853 by Sara Smith, Charleston Townhouse is one of four row houses that warehoused goods smuggled through the Union blockade during the Civil War. Workstead’s renovation of the unique property draws on this storied past without recreating or romanticizing it. After stabilizing the structure and weaving new mechanical systems through the house, Workstead oversaw a painstaking restoration of original doors, windows, stairs, and flooring.

The layout prioritizes the historic architecture unless present-day conditions demanded thoughtful intervention. Rather than open the first floor entirely, for example, we created a floor-to-ceiling mahogany storage element that opens to both the dining room and kitchen. This modern approach to traditional Charleston homes’ library shelving maintains separateness between rooms while providing both rooms with enough storage for the contemporary homeowner.

Decorative ceiling moldings, window trim, doors and fireplaces were preserved throughout the home and updated with a fresh coat of paint. For the furnishings, 19th-century pieces were paired with contemporary design. Workstead mixed a lot of materiality, blending wood, wicker, leather, tile and plush textiles.

入口大厅设置有BDDW书柜、Sawkille长凳和圆形镜子。客厅里摆放着Lawson Fenning Moreno沙发和躺椅，再配上一张古董马赛克咖啡桌。Workstead自己的照明设计也融入其中。

A BDDW credenza, Sawkille bench and round mirror are set in the entry hall. A Lawson Fenning Moreno sofa and lounge chairs complete the living room paired with an antique mosaic coffee table. Workstead’s own lighting designs are also incorporated within.

A Lawson Fenning dining table and Milo Baughman caned chairs make up a dining area located in the drawing room on the home’s first level. An additional seating area features an Adrian Pearsall sofa, sling chairs and a mahogany bed being used as a coffee table. Workstead’s Lodge Chandelier hangs above paired with Jim Bindman floor lamps. In the kitchen, a circular wooden counter is at the center, topped with marble. The curved elements slide out to provide a counter for eating.

Upstairs, one bedroom features a wooden framed bed while the primary suite bed is backed by a brass headboard. This en suite is darkly painted, and sinks were built out to face the window. An animal skin rug and freestanding bathtub complete the space. A vintage bamboo outdoor sofa and lounge chairs sit together on the covered veranda.
